ONTARIO SENIORS WILL BE HURT BY THE DST
NEWS
KINGSTON – Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak today met with 40 Kingston-area seniors to discuss the impact that Dalton McGuinty’s Sales Tax (DST) will have on the financial security and quality of life for seniors in Kingston and province-wide.
Christine McMillan, Chair of the Councils of Aging Network of Ontario, David Swerdfeger President of the Frontenac – Kingston Council on Aging and Ruth Peters, Secretary of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario also participated in the discussion.
On July 1st, 2010 the Dalton Sales Tax is scheduled to take effect. By merging the PST and GST, the McGuinty Liberal Government will increase taxes by 8% on items that were previously exempt from provincial sales tax. Among the items to skyrocket in price are home heating fuel, hydro bills, gasoline, and mutual fund fees.
Hudak encouraged seniors and families in Kingston and throughout Ontario to speak up and join in the fight against the DST by signing a petition to stop this new tax. For a full list of items that will be taxed under the DST and to sign the petition please visit www.daltonsalestax.com.
QUOTES
“The DST is a tax on seniors, their financial security and their peace of mind. We must all work together to stop Dalton McGuinty’s tax on seniors before it is too late.”
- Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak
“Dalton McGuinty should be doing what I am doing and coming to Kingston to hear the real concerns that seniors and families have about the DST. Instead, Premier McGuinty is trying to ram through the biggest sales tax increase in Ontario’s history without your knowledge, input or consent.”

QUICK FACTS

- The DST will be a tax on retirement savings and related services – including higher prices for mutual fund fees, exchange-traded funds, insurance premiums, lawyers and estate planning fees, and accountant bills.
- A typical senior couple living at home could expect to pay up to $2,800 in new taxes due to the DST being applied to a broader range of goods and services.
