Dalton Sales Tax Will Hit Condo Owners Hard: Hudak
Leader of the Opposition Tim Hudak and PC candidate for St. Paul’s, Sue-Ann Levy, continued their fight on the ground and online to stop Dalton McGuinty’s latest tax grab – the harmonized sales tax – before it is implemented. Standing outside a Toronto condo building, Hudak and Levy revealed the extent to which condo owners will be hit hard by the HST or what the Ontario PC Caucus calls the Dalton Sales Tax or DST.
Hudak and Levy called on Ontario condo owners to join them in the fight to stop the DST by signing a petition at www.daltonsalestax.com to show the Liberals that families in the province oppose this massive tax grab.
QUOTES
“Ontario families are already working hard enough to manage household expenses, balance the chequebook and pay the bills, and with Dalton McGuinty’s latest tax grab it will be even harder. Under the Dalton Sales Tax, condo owners will be punished at a time when they can least afford it, because the DST means an automatic jump in the price of owning a condo. The Dalton Sales Tax must be stopped.”
- Tim Hudak, Leader of the Opposition
“While the DST doesn’t apply directly to condo fees, it will increase the costs of most services that condo fees pay for, such as landscaping, security, snow removal and maintenance. I can tell you from personal experience, I am a condo owner and my condo board has warned us that our fees could increase by as much as 13 per cent once the Dalton Sales Tax comes into effect. This staggering tax grab must be stopped.”
- Sue-Ann Levy, PC Candidate, St. Paul’s
“It’s time to tell Dalton McGunity that enough is enough, before he takes one more dollar from your pocket. Ontario families deserve our support, especially now during tough economic times and that’s why I’m committed to fighting and stopping the Dalton Sales Tax.”
- Tim Hudak, Leader of the Opposition
QUICK FACTS
- The Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario (ACMO) estimates the DST will increase the average condos’ operational costs by a minimum of 6 per cent. That increase will be passed on to the condo owners themselves in the form of higher condo fees.
- For a condo owner who pays $400 in monthly condo fees, that means an additional $290 per year.
- Ontario’s Condominium Act requires condo owners to contribute to a reserve fund for long-term renewal.
- ACMO estimates implementation of the DST will require condo boards to contribute an additional $80 million in reserve funds province wide to meet planned expenditures for major repairs. This shortfall will force condo owners to replenish the fund by paying an average of $2,000 per unit.
